Beside the Bibles, the psalter was a popular type of manuscript in the twelfth century. The psalter was a private devotional book, often owned by people in some religious vocation. The psalters are expensive picture books with long series of illustrations prefaced to the main text. The Ingeborg Psalter was owned by the French queen Ingeborg, wife of Philip Augustus.
